Tampere Ambassador: Henrique Carrara

Where are you from?
I was born biggest city of Brazil. My family moved to Campinas when I was 10 years old, I did my high school and my first degree in History at the best university of my home country. As all Brazilians, my family has a very mixed origin (Italian, Austrian, Portuguese and African). This way, I am always fighting against preconception and reinforce that people need to be measured by their deeds and potential.

What would you like to tell about yourself?
I am a guy that loves to get new knowledge and challenges. I was the first one in my family to get inside a public university in Brazil (the public high education in Brazil is very well evaluated). I always liked to be part of voluntary projects which help people to achieve new skills and I'm a guy that likes to be involved with the student politics (Member of Student Union in Brazil and of TUT's ESN INTO in Finland). Here in Finland I feel that I still can make a lot of difference.

Why is Tampere the best place to live?
Tampere is a city where things are used to work like a well-designed machine. You see transport and other public services working very well. And you don't see people complaining about the city structure. The universities are not only producing knowledge, but they are also strongly connected with the companies. Tampere is a city where you can find anything that a big city can offer (nice and comfortable libraries, movies, theatre, museums, nice restaurants and a very diverse night life) and still have opportunity to walk some few hundred meters to meet the nature in the woods or at the one of the many lakes around the city. Although there are many business opportunities unexplored yet. I believe that Tampere still has a big potential for growing.

Tell about your professional activities?
In Brazil I was a history teacher for five years and wrote a collection of books for the school system. I eventually changed my career to automation engineering. Now, in Finland, I am an exchange student at TUT inside a government program that picked the best students of Brazil to develop skills, to get knowledge and international work experience.

What is your involvement in international activities?
In Brazil I was involved with projects at transnational companies such as Unilever, P&G, Avon, Givaudan and Odebrecht. This way, I started to be inside multi-cultural teams and I started to really like to be challenged to gather people together around the same goal. In Finland I am communication responsible at ESN INTO, that is the international students club inside TUT that helps the international students (and international Finns) to be connected to Finnish culture and Tampere's life.

What is your mission as a Tampere Ambassador?
My mission as Tampere Ambassador is to make happen the connection between international people and business opportunities. I am also volunteer at Twinkle project and I do believe that new heads can help with creative ideas to turn crisis time in a time for opportunities. As a citizen of the world, I want to make the place that I live better by my actions.

What potential do you see for Tampere in the future?
Tampere is already a very important tech-friendly and student-friendly city. It is close to other important cities (Helsinki and Turku) and still has potential for tourism. In the region, food and chemical industry is almost unexplored. I believe that, with some creativity, Tampere can became a stronger economical site in Europe.
