Tampere Ambassador: Jayashree Balasubramanian

Where are you from?
I am originally from Kerala, usually known as “God’s own land“ which is situated in the southern part of India. I was brought up in the neighbouring state, Karnataka and stayed in one of the most culturally enriched city Mysore where I completed my post graduation in Cytogenetics.

I am married to a Doctor specialised in radiology who is rased in another state Maharashtra, in Mumbai for 25 years. I have two lovely daughters who are professionals in their own fields.  One is an budding economist and the other one is a lawyer. My driving forces are my daughters and my husband and they are proud of me being an Ambassador.
I am an M.Sc, B.Ed , PGDHRM (Management) and currently pursuing my Ph.D.

What would you like to tell about yourself?
I have managed to carve myself a career though I started only after the age of 35. I had personal responsibilities to tend to. Now I have 15 years of experience in the field of education.

Why is Tampere the best place to live?
People in Tampere are friendly and helpful but speak only when spoken to. The city is not polluted, there are fewer people to jostle as I come from a city which is highly populated and over crowded. Higher Education is an equal opportunity for all, which is amazing.

Tell about your professional activities?
I'm head of the International Relations Office in the University of higher education. I facilitate mobility of students and I'm actively involved in internationalisation of the University.

What is your involvement in international activities?
I'm actively involved in Internationalisation of higher education.

What is your mission as a Tampere Ambassador?
I would like to promote Tampere as the most wanted place to live and study for the South and South East Asian countries. Though the climate varies and maximum number of months have shorter days. It is a place to be innovative and start entrepreneurial activities even in young age.

What potential do you see for Tampere in the future?
There is great potential in Tampere however it has to be tapped. Textile Industry can be started again.
Fishing can be a lucrative business. As an outsider it would appeal if there are sign boards in both English and Finnish.
