Where are you from?
I’m from Tampere. I grew up in the north-western suburb Lentävänniemi, which is surrounded by beautiful natural scenery. The area has witnessed rapid development in recent years. Nowadays I live in Järvensivu, which is close to the city center. Lake Iidesjärvi and the cemetery of Kalevankangas, which are some of my favourite places in Tampere, are not far away from where I live.
What would you like to tell about yourself?
I’m a world citizen, urban enthusiast and interested in city development. I’m in love with my hometown, but I also like to travel a lot and meet new international people. In my free time I go to the gym, listen to music and try new restaurants.
What makes Tampere special for you?
Tampere is the city where I was born and the place I call home. Many of my friends moved to other cities in order to study and work, but I never dreamed of leaving. I lived abroad on many occasions but I have never lived in any other city in Finland. For me Tampere is the best city and it has always been exciting to return back after longer periods abroad.
Tell about your professional activities?
I’m a teacher of foreign languages, but nowadays I work in an internationally oriented, Tampere-based company called Asia Exchange. We offer students opportunities to take part in study abroad semesters at our selected partner universities in Asia. The destination countries are China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. Thousands of students have gone abroad through us, from over 400 universities around the world.
What is your involvement in international activities?
During my studies at Tampere University I worked as an international tutor for incoming international students and introduced them to Tampere and Finnish culture. I did my Erasmus in Essen, Germany, which is a partner city of Tampere. I also studied abroad in Iceland and in Austria and did a Comenius Teacher Assistantship in Ankara, Turkey. Living abroad not only gave me a great international network of friends and colleagues but made me see Tampere and Finland from a new perspective. Thanks to my current job, I’m privileged to travel for work and communicate with many different nationalities in several different languages every day.
What is your mission as a Tampere - All Bright! Ambassador?
I want to raise the awareness of Tampere by promoting this fantastic city to my international network by sharing pictures, news and videos on social media. Tampere is a magnificent place to visit. Being a Tampere ambassador is a unique way of expressing my love for the city where I was born and bred.
What potential do you see for Tampere in the future?
It’s wonderful how Tampere has developed in recent years. This is a youthful city and it really seems that there is no lack of innovative ideas: a new university and a tunnel, AiRRport Concept, Ratina shopping center, tramway project, a new arena and a casino. There is always something inspiring going on and the nature is very beautiful here. When it comes to cities in Finland, for now most tourists haven’t travelled beyond Helsinki, but I believe this is going to change in the future. Tampere has huge potential to be the new hotspot of the Nordic countries.
