Where are you from?
I was born and I lived my whole childhood in Tampere.
What would you like to tell about yourself?
I graduated from Hatanpaan Lukio high school and immediately after my graduation I started my studies in Tampere University of Technology, from where I graduated in 1991. After the graduation I‘ve been working in several international positions, first few years in Finland and then few in France. After my stay in France I came back to Finland for a couple of years and since 2013 I have been living with my family in the sunny Florida, USA.
Why is Tampere the best place to live?
Tampere is a most agreeable city between two beautiful lakes. In Tampere you can live in the city with all the services available and still in the walking distance from the wild nature. Tampere is a very international and modern city with three internationally recognized universities. Tampere has an extremely functional and modern public transportation system and extensive network of well-maintained, beautiful parks.
Tell about your professional activities?
I have been working with bioabsorbable polymers and composites during my whole career. I started as a researcher carrying out bioabsorbable material and processing studies in Tampere University of Technology, continued with development of the absorbable nonwovens for medical, hygiene and agricultural applications in France and the last 16 years I have been working with medical device applications mostly with bioabsorbable orthopedic implants, first 13 years in Finland and then last 3 years in USA.
Significant part of my duties here in USA is managing ConMed Corporation’s material research activities, which involves collaboration with raw material providers, universities and research institutes domestically here in USA as well as abroad, mainly in Europe. I have been able to maintain and keep active most of our old-established Finnish research collaboration contacts we had from Tampere region.
What is your involvement in international activities?
I have been living and working three different countries during my career. Remarkable part of my duties during last 16 years has been building up and maintaining international business collaboration. During these years I was able to build extensive international network not only for business but in personal life as well.
Currently in my work at ConMed Corporation here in Florida I utilize my international contact network on a daily basis.
What is your mission as a Tampere - All Bright! Ambassador?
My mission as a Tampere- All Bright! Ambassador is to promote Tampere region as a great place to do business, it has a lot of expertise especially in biotechnology and medical devices and it has a perfect infrastructure for research with three well-known and respected universities and VTT (Technical Research Centre of Finland).
What potential do you see for Tampere in the future?
Tampere has great potential for being globally the main hub for biotechnology research, development and manufacturing not only for the materials but also for the electronics and wearable medical devices.
