Tampere Ambassador: Marko Seppä

Where are you from?
Born in Pori, having grown up in Seinäjoki, I moved to Tampere at age 10 in 1975 and have lived in the region ever since.

What would you like to tell about yourself?
I love alpine skiing, worthwhile problems, and family, friends and fools. And ILVES, of course.

What makes Tampere special for you?
Most of my closest friends live in Tampere. I’ve lived in the region for over 40 years, I'm alumni of Tampereen yhteiskoulu and University of Tampere, and my children were born in Tampere.

Tell about your professional activities?
My professional conviction is to help good people build great companies, sometimes as co-entrepreneur. Personally, I built a VC firm into Russian and Baltic markets in the 1990s, eBRC as sub-program of eTampere and a global venture lab experiment, which produced Kasvu Open, during 2001-2011.

What is your involvement in international activities?
I currently live in Hanoi helping Vietnam-Finland Innovation Partnership Program (www.ipp.vn) build a healthy startup ecosystem in Vietnam, one the hottest “startup economies” of the world. I’ve helped IPP create a portfolio of 18 grant-funded companies and select 11 university teams for a training of trainers program. I currently help Finnish and Vietnamese companies establish partnerships for “global business creation” — backed by a Tekes-Natif Joint Call for grant funding.

What is your mission as a Tampere - All Bright! Ambassador?
I want to increase awareness of the good people, great companies and support structures Tampere has to offer when seeking highly competent and trustworthy partners for the most demanding and the most rewarding world-win missions.

What potential do you see for Tampere in the future?
Tampere's future potential is in Tampere's future people. The future people comprise our own youngsters of today and those who'll move to Tampere from around the world between today and the future. Tampere is the city of labour. I see potential in the ongoing transformation from people who sell their labour to big companies to people who invest their labour in small companies.
