Tampere Ambassador: René Graichen

Where are you from?
Originally I am from a small town called Gössnitz close to Leipzig and Chemnitz (Partner City of Tampere) in Germany. I have now since already 5 years been living and working in Tampere area, actually in Vesilahti.

What would you like to tell about yourself?
I am married to a Finn (surprisingly) and we have 3 happy children. We have decided to move to Finland because of various reasons. Mostly the work/life balance in Finland is much better than in other countries in the world. As well the education is world leading and has a unique approach which combines learning and having fun at the same time. We wanted our kids growing up in a welcoming, nature valued and social community environment.

I have been studying in Finland as an exchange student in 2002. I met my wife during that time. We then moved for a while to China and re-located back to Germany. When I have time I do a lot of outdoor activities and especially enjoy the boating season in the summer.

Why is Tampere the best place to live?
Tampere is a great combination between all the comforts of a city with a fantastic natural setting. You can reach any point in the city within 20 min. It offers splendid events for business and education as well as culture and entertainment.

Tell about your professional activities?
I am a MBA working for an international American based industrial company (Parker Hannfin). I have held several positions from Product -, Customer Relations, Supply Chain Management. At the moment I am leading a Plant in Urjala and we are first tier supplier for many OEMs in Finland but also internationally.

What is your involvement in international activities?
On daily basis I am dealing with international customers, suppliers and partner divisions. As example our location is part of a Division which has 10 different locations reaching from UK to South Africa.

What is your mission as a Tampere Ambassador?
I would like to use my international network and experience to connect to local companies and try to find win/win situations.

What potential do you see for Tampere in the future?
Especially on combining traditional industrial engineering with new technologies and developing out side the box ideas can give Tampere international recognition.
