Where are you from?
I am from Pakistan and currently living in London, UK. I lived in Tampere for 4 years, when I was studding and working there.
What would you like to tell about yourself?
I am an open minded person having passion for travelling along with achieving professional career goals on the same time. I did BS honours in computer science from Lahore Pakistan and went to University of Tampere to pursue master’s degree in the same field. I believe in freedom of expression, economic empowerment for everyone and free education for all. I am currently living in London UK and working as a senior software engineer in financial sector.
What makes Tampere special for you?
I selected Tampere to pursue my master’s degree because of its high standards of education and research as well as it was free for everyone. Tampere, and Finland in general, is a beautiful place full of nature and calm and provides all the facilities one can look for in urban metros. It is blessed with nature and that has an overall effect on the lifestyle of the people. While studding and working at the same time, I had enough time to relax, and for socialising which is rare in bigger cities. I still miss the Finnish winters, especially the saunas and bathing in the frozen lakes while taking sauna. [And I have a Finnish marriage certificate when I married to my German wife in Tampere]
Tell about your professional activities?
I am a software developer by profession and currently working as senior software engineer in a financial firm in London. I have lived and worked in three different countries (so far) and have a vast portfolio of working with both multinationals as well as innovative tech start-ups. Working in different countries is very special for me because it really helps me to be more open to different cultures and professional approaches. I consider myself as a problem solver when placed in a team or role because I am more adoptive to changes and helps me understand the issues easily.
What is your involvement in international activities?
London being my third home so far, I always have the passion to travel, be inside a country or to a different one. I have a good network of people, both colleagues and school mates, across the globe, working and/or studding at most reputable firms and universities. I actively take part on different forums /social media to guide students travelling for studies. I like to visit major universities whenever I travel abroad. I also attend several ITC exhibitions and fairs in UK and Europe.
What is your mission as a Tampere Ambassador?
To make Tampere more visible and recognised in terms of tourism, education and research. Tampere is a good place for innovation because it attracts students from different nations and backgrounds which makes it an ideal place for innovative ideas and start-ups as compared to other university towns/countries where only privileged have resources to study.
What potential do you see for Tampere in the future?
Tampere has huge potential for tourism considering its nature, facilities, lifestyle and friendly people. Its universities have high standards of education and research, making it an idea candidate to become an education hub in the region, which can further lead to a good platform for innovation, and start-up businesses.
