IESAF - How to Make Friends and Network in English in Tampere

Do you enjoy socialising and networking in English? Would you like to meet other English speakers in the Tampere region? If so, we might just have the answer for you.

The International English Speakers’ Association of Finland RY (or IESAF for short), is an organisation that aims to serve the needs of internationally minded people living in Finland. This friendly, volunteer-driven, association has members from all over the world. Members include native English speakers as well as people who use English as a second language. Membership is free, and comes with a range of benefits and discounts. You can sign up for your free membership here.

Founded by the current president, Richard Berman, the association has grown over the years, and now has around 8 500 members. IESAF provides online forums such as it’s nationwide Facebook group. There is even a Tampere Facebook group for specific local issues.

As well as providing forums for sharing information, IESAF holds social events and networking opportunities. In Helsinki, there is the regular Mid-Week Meet Up and Pub Quiz. Every year IESAF holds a special family St Patrick’s Day.

The social scene in Tampere is now becoming more active amongst the English speaking community, largely thanks to three Brits; Nick Walters, Ashley Penn, and Peter Cork. For example, IESAF are promoting bimonthly social events at Panimoravintola Plevna. These evenings are organised by Nick. The Plevna social events have been drawing a regular crowd of over 40 people, and have become so popular that in the future they may be held every month.

If family fun is your thing, IESAF are promoting a special family day at Plevna in Tampere on the 20th of August 2017. The event is the brainchild of father-of-two Peter, and is being organised with help from fellow dad, Ashley. The event is held in association with Tredea, and will include a free finger-food buffet, popcorn machine, candy-floss machine, live music, kid’s fancy dress and colouring competitions (with prizes), book seller Maria Vatanen (The Book Lady), and much more. The event is completely free for adults and children. If you are interested please register by filling in this form. All social events in Tampere are promoted in IESAF’s Tampere Facebook page.
