Practical information prepares mentees for the working world
Mari Taverne from Tredea and an international talent Oana Syrjäläinen took part in the mentoring programme for international talents in Tampere in 2011. The mentoring programme includes four group sessions that are spread over six months. In addition, the mentor and mentee meet face-to-face five times according to their own schedule. The mentors receive training in advance.
“First my mentee and I discussed the themes recommended in the training package, which helped us get off to a good start,” says Mari Taverne. She served as a mentor in a similar programme that was intended for foreign students studying in Tampere.
Taverne was matched with Oana Syrjäläinen who studies tourism at Tampere University of Applied Science. Oana comes from Romania and will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in hospitality management before the end of the year. After graduation, she wants to find work in Finland. Having worked in the tourism industry, Mari shared her practical experiences with Oana.
“I gained more confidence and received excellent advice about the usual workplace policies and procedures in Finland. I’ll soon be able to put Mari’s advice to good use,” says Oana, who has landed a summer job in a local hotel.
