Tampere Ambassador: Juha Välimäki

Where are you from?
Born in Finland, but spent almost half of my life abroad (Sweden 1.5 years, Lebanon 3 months and Turkey soon 22 years).

What would you like to tell about yourself?
I have studied at Tampere TUT (TTKK) Hervanta 2 long programs: SW Engineering and a custom set of Signal/Image Processing/Telecommunications

What makes Tampere special for you?
I enjoyed living inTampere, it is just of correct size for me. Traffic flows well, buses go frequently enough, you don't loose time travelling in Tampere. Excellent frequent and fast enough train connections on the Finnish main railway. Especially down to Helsinki in the South and also directly up to Oulu and Rovaniemi in the North. The environment is very clean and the large lakes are beautiful. I used to go jogging and swimming to UKK institute area. I enjoyed also Pyynikki, Pispala, the lake/beach in Hervanta and the Library in the center. I lived in Kaleva/Tammela area in Tampere. There were also a sufficient number of flats for students (3 people with own room for each and a common kitchen and a common bathroom) The amusement park Sarkanniemi is excellent, great roller-coasters.

Tell about your professional activities?
I work as Product Development Manager in a R&D and SW-house TTG-International on the Asian side of Istanbul in Turkey. I have worked as techncal expert in 2G,3G and 4G cellphone networks for long term at Telia/Sonera Finland, at Turkcell and at Vodafone, Turkey and at Libancell, Lebanon.

What is your involvement in international activities?
My life, and wife and lots of friends are Turkish as well as my current employer. I have close friends also from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh here, some in Bulgaria, Sweden, USA and Australia. I have visited 35 countries around the world. My kids are double citizens of Finland and Turkey. They speak 4 languages like me, but instead of my Swedish they know Spanish from school. They both race Motocross in Turkish National Team, East-European and my daughter additionally in European Women categories. They have several 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions in Turkish Championships from several years. My both kids race 250cc with the fastest boys/men. The other few females race in slower categories in Turkey/ East-Europe. North- and West-Europe like Finland hast totally maybe 50 fast female racers.

What is your mission as a Tampere Ambassador?
I can recommend Tampere to foreigners as a place to study, visit or live in.
Tampere is also cheaper than Helsinki area and less parking problems, and the traffic flows very well.

What potential do you see for Tampere in the future?
I believe Tampere will keep growing as there is free space around it at reasonable distance. The unbuilt areas in Helsinki area are located quite far from the center. Tampere has more industry/high-tech companies, bigger University, and better road/railway connection than Turku area. In summer time the water at beaches of Tampere lakes is much warmer than the sea water in Helsinki/Turku area and it is also less windy, so it is better for swimming outdoors. Also access to public indoor swimming pools is easy thanks to less parking problems compared to Helsinki.
